‘The Last Supper’

There are very few people in this world who know their expiration date- the exact moment their life will end. Inmates spending a decade or more on death row have years to think of that moment. They know when and exactly how they will die. On a day like any other, they will be taken to a sterile room, an IV will be inserted into each arm (one a back up, in case the other fails). And a series of injected drugs, like life’s nighttime janitors, will walk the halls of the convict’s blood stream, flicking off the lights of various vital organs until the condemned ceases to be.

The day before this reckoning, they will be asked for their last meal request. The contents of which are printed in every obituary, described in every press release. We are fascinated by these details. Who is this person? What was their life like? How did they get to death row? What do we hope to learn from the order of fried chicken or that slice of cake?
